New Zealand has an affinity with water, hence the Silver Fern cuts through the diagonal of the flag to capture the waves of the sea. The significance of the Silver Fern is that it is a native and is recognised globally as a New Zealand symbol of excellence. The Southern Cross viewed from New Zealand in the Southern skies has been used through the ages to navigate past inhabitants to our lands from afar bringing open hearts, open minds, and open doors.
