This volume of data is compiled from deeds and Crown grants held at Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), Auckland and complements the report ‘The Katikati-Te Puna Reserves: Issues Arising from their Alienation 1868-1900’. In many cases the deeds and Crown grants are the only documentary sources available to the researcher on this subject so what little can be said with confidence about many of the alienations is based on the legal and technical details of the transactions presented in the following tables.
The organisation of the material is straightforward. Leases and permanent alienations that occurred between 1868 and 1900 are featured and the transactions are grouped by parish. Some comment has been made where there are inexplicable or unusual details in the indexes, deeds, or grants. Ambiguous information has been placed inside square brackets. Where information appears to have been omitted from documents this has been noted on a table as ‘Not recorded’. Finally, for practical reasons and because of the general nature of the main report, hapu affiliations of grantees have not been noted in the tables. Rather, the award of reserves in the Katikati-Te Puna block has been placed within the broader context of other lands returned to the grantees by the government. The index lists that accompany Evelyn Stokes’ The Allocation of Reserves for Maori in the Tauranga Confiscated Lands (Hamilton, 1997) have provided the necessary information. Variations in the name of a grantee have not been used to make the lists of ‘Other lands awarded’, which means that this portion of the table is indicative rather than conclusive.
