PREFACE
There are twenty-eight parts to this volume as the 1,450 documents reproduced here amount to over 14,000 pages. These 28 parts collectively comprise the companion volume to The Hauraki Tribal Lands, Parts1-4 by David Alexander. This volume contains all the reference material necessary to support that report.
The reproduction quality of some plans and deeds is at a lower standard than would normally have been expected. This is because reproduction at the A4 size contained in this part of the volume is a reduction from the much larger size of the original document. Also the general condition of the original document may have deteriorated over the years: ink or pencil lines have faded; pages have been ripped, torn or are missing, and in some instances they have been damaged by water, fire, mildew or insects. The detailed references which are provided enable the reader to check the original source document.
The index to all supporting papers is set out in the preliminary pages found at the beginning of each part of this volume. A user guide is also provided.

USER GUIDE
The Hauraki Tribal Lands Supporting Papers, Parts 1 to 28 are over 14,000 pages of documentation relevant to The Hauraki Treaty Claims, and in particular the work of David Alexander who has researched the history of approximately 700 blocks of Maori land. These were the original Maori land blocks that were alienated mainly to the Crown and in most cases were subsequently sub-divided many times to form the present day pattern of land ownership in Hauraki.
Each document has been given its own unique identifier and has been categorised according to document type and the block of land or subject it relates to.
There are 23 different types of documents which have been labelled Section A through to Section W. These comprise deeds, files, Maori Land Court Minute Book records, survey plans, Certificates of Title, Land Registry Documents, Turton's Publications, Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives, Parliamentary Debates and Gazette Notices.
A copy of the main index is included in each part. The main index is organised as follows:

BOARD OF MAORI AFFAIRS
Proposed Acquisition of Maori Land by the Crown
and Wahine Rukuwai 2B Areas 12ac, Or. 30 p.
•
Location In the Piako County, 7 miles west of Te Arabs.
Remarks 1. The block adjoins Crown owned land to the north
and east and its'acquisition is desired so that development work can be carried out of the whole area. The block has no access and is uneconomic,
2, By purchases made about 1920 and subsequently,
the Crown has acquired ownership of all but 3
roods of the block. This remaining tindividadi interest is owned by two Maoris who acquired ownership by succession in 1931. In spite of extensive enquiries, it has not been possible to locate these two owners.
The present proposal is that application should
be made to the Maori Land Court for an order under section 447/1953, vesting these two interests in the Maori Trustee for the purpose of sale, The Maori Trustee could then execute a transfer to the Crown,
A special Government Valuation of the block made
as at 18 July, 1957, was Capital £25, with no improvements. On this basis the value of the Maori
interests would be £1,11s. The Crown is prepared to offer £3.
Authority
Section 252 Maori Affairs Act, 1953.
Submitted to the Executive Committee of the Board in terms of Board minute Fo.9170 of 29.6.54,
Recomendation
That the Board of Maori Affairs approve of negotiations being entered into for the acquisition by the Crown of the remaining Maori–owned interests in the Wahine RUkuwai 23 block for a consideration of not less than 23.
Board's Decision Approved.
Assistant Secretary for Maori Affairs
Director–General of Lands

11th, October, 2921.
WA1XAXA RIVIRRI7R- PIAXO BLOCK.
The Under-Secretary for Lands, Wellington.
In reply to your letter of the 22nd. ultimo enclosing a oopy of a letter from Ranglaehitia Tumake of Tehuna Morrinaville, I beg to inform you that the positio of this Reserve has not been located. Acting under Sub-seotion 1 of Section 5 of 'The Native Land Claims and Round. -arises Adjustment and Titles Fanpowering Aot,1894e, Judge fiat made an order, dated the 9th. 1aroh, 1897, vesting the land in 36 natives but his :ninutes of the hearing do not show that any plan was proluoed, awl no mention is made of the location of the land. On the 13th. June 1907, we wrote to the Registrar of the Native Land Court telling him that there was a dispute as to the position of this Block and caking some information as we heti no idea where it was situated; tht matter was then referred by the Registrar to Judge Rdger who replied that the Reserve oould not possibly be Waikaks C 2 al this is a partition of Walks,. Block, and that eTamihana Hughes states that the Reserve is where Sections 1 and 2 (ma: -ed on litho enclosed herewith) are now Situated, 'but as the, sections are now in European occupation, suggests that the Reserve he laid out adjoining Waikawa C2 on the *buthe. This is the same portion as S' ated by Th-ngiswhitt, Tilrnakert

•The Reserve was to be seleoted by Mr. F.W. Puckey within the boundaries of the old Piako purchase. Mr. Puokey can no doubt locate it is asked to do so (see Turton's Index page 555 and 560). If the whole of the land has been disposed of without making any provisions for the reserve then the slain will have to be settled by a money payment or by &lowing the Natives to
Seleot land elsewhere as suggested by Judge Edgers. The Regiatrar thereupon saw Mr. Puokey and in a letter to Mr. Sheridan, dated the 4th. Ootober, 1907, says:-
'!r. H.W. Puokey stated conclusively that the Reserve
was to be situated at the site of the old olearings
and Kaingas. This particular land however is already
the subjeot of a Native Land Court order and is known
as Waikawa C 2.6
and Mr. Sheridan replies:-
'Clearly Mr. Puckey had no power or authority to locate the Reserve outside of lands owned at the time by the Crown. You had better get a suggestion from the Commissioner of Crown Lands as to where the': ' Reserve should now be looated and send it to the Chief Judge in time for ooneideration before the washing bill is introduced'.
This, however, was not done and no further action has been taken. As the boundaries of the old Piako purchase oa3not now very well be defined and as the entire area is probably all absorbed by Crown seotions, and the part now asked for as the Reserve being under lease to Mr. Sootcher, I beg to suggest that either the Native owners be paid compensation as suggested by Mr. Sheridan or else asked to select a pieoe of Crown Land in some other looality. Will you kindly let me know you wishes on the subjeot and if you decide to give theta land elsewhere I will instruct surveyor to me4t them on the ground and mark off the part they select.

mass Blocks like Egarna 5A. Bo. 2 are taken as nem:eery' for the better disposal of the lands set apart under the "Hauraki Plains let 19014" cos much the same considerations apply to them..
There is practically no dispute as to the actual 'value at time of taking. The Government Valuation for A NO. 2 was £425 and for B £700. It is not disputed however that the owners of A Bo. 2 bad executed deeds and received deposits of purchase money at £6 per acre which would make a value of £510.
I have visited the land. It has undoubtedly profited by the drainage scheme though there are no works on the land itself.
Deducting what I consider reasonable for the enhanced value due to the soheme I fix the value at
Taikaka A No, 2 £360.
" B £494.
Bo' order as to costs.
Orders therefore that the compensation for Taikaka A No, 2 be £360 and for Taikaka Bs £494 to be paid the Tnikato.Maniapoto .Maori Land Board for the respiotive owners in proportion o their relative interests in the land.
Awards to bear interest at t 4* per cent per annum if not paid within one month from date of order.
