Harataunga marae committee member since inception.  Supporter of the Kura Kaupapa.  Involved in the Foreshore and Seabed debate.

Maori Education, the marae, pest eradication, Te Reo and tikanga, whenua rahui.  Played rugby for the East Coast in his time but unable to play regularly because of his work.

Abstract

Matua Winiata talks of growing up on the East Coast, going to school at Te Aute College and moving to Harataunga to the family farm.  He spent 2 years in Auckland when the farm could not sustain his whanau but returned and has been farming in Harataunga since.  He was involved in the building of the marae and went back to the Coast after Cyclone Bola to collect the fallen trees for the carving in the marae Rakaiora at Haratunga and has been a strong supporter of Kura Kaupapa and Maori education.
